Explore what it is like to be a light keeper on a craggy rock with a giant panoramic view and majestic black sand beaches. The island was held in trust by a dozen families who made this their home here at Pt. Porphyry, during the shipping season.

Capt. Archie Hoogsteen and a group of visitors travel to Porphyry Island.

Starting at Silver Islet your charter will take you over the famous silver mine as you cross Black Bay. Panoramic view of the Sleeping Giant can be seen left behind as you depart the mine shafts glimmering shadows. Black Bay’s north shore coast showcase three extinct volcanoes.

Reaching Porphyry Island experience the unique climate, plant habitat and hear the light keepers’ stories, through a guided or self-guided tour. Lighthouses offer many perspectives to explore from keepers and their chickens or to ships run aground 200 meters of the light itself.

Your trip to the lighthouse takes 20 minutes and your charter captain will share local attractions on the water and around Porphyry Island. During your tour of the island there’s lots to see and to learn. After a picnic lunch, explore the black sands beaches, go for a swim or just do absolutely nothing.

Children still play at the lighthouse. The keeper’s children had many adventures to share.
